STI SpecSeal SSP4S Fire Barrier Putty Pad

STI SpecSeal SSP4S Fire Barrier Putty Pad

Non-hardening, intumescent compound designed to seal through-penetrations as well as certain membrane penetrations against the spread of fire, smoke and hot gasses

  • Requires no tools
  • Aggressive adhesion
  • Expands up to eight times in size

SKU: 22999

The SpecSeal SSP4S is a professional-grade firestop putty pad designed to protect electrical boxes in fire-rated gypsum wall assemblies. Each pad measures 7.25 inches square and 3/16 inch thick, nearly twice the thickness of most standard putty pads on the market. This added mass delivers superior fire protection and acoustic performance compared to thinner alternatives.

How It Works

The pad uses a two-stage intumescent technology. Under normal conditions, it remains soft and pliable, forming an airtight seal around outlet boxes, switch boxes, and other membrane penetrations. When exposed to fire, the intumescent compounds activate at 230°F and expand to more than five times their original volume. This expansion seals the opening and blocks the passage of flames, smoke, and hot gases through the electrical box penetration.

Unlike calcium-based intumescent products, the SSP4S contains no water-soluble expansion ingredients. This means the active compounds won’t wash out if exposed to moisture during construction, and the pad maintains its protective properties over the long term.

What Makes It Different

The non-hardening formula sets SpecSeal apart from sealants and caulks that cure rigid. The putty stays pliable indefinitely, so you can reposition it during installation, make adjustments after inspection, or remove and reuse it during renovations. For contractors, this eliminates the rework headaches that come with hardened firestop materials.

The SSP4S also pulls double duty as an acoustic seal. With an STC rating of 62 in tested constructions, it outperforms many competing putty pads (typically rated STC 50-55) for sound isolation. This makes it a practical choice when fire protection and soundproofing are both specified on the same project.

Key Features

UL Certified, FM Approved

Tested to ASTM E814, UL 263, and CAN/ULC-S115 standards. Listed under UL Category CLIV for wall opening protective materials in assemblies up to 2 hours.

Intumescent Expansion

Activates at 230°F and expands over 500% to seal openings during a fire. Endothermic fillers absorb heat and release water to further slow heat transfer.

Non-Hardening Formula

Stays soft and pliable for the life of the installation. Allows repositioning, retrofit, and re-entry without chipping or cutting out cured material.

Tool-Free Installation

The pad is sized to fit standard 4S boxes with no cutting required. Aggressive adhesion bonds to steel boxes, plastic boxes, cable jackets, and drywall.

Superior Acoustic Performance

STC 62 rating helps meet sound isolation requirements in party walls, multi-family housing, hotels, hospitals, and other noise-sensitive applications.

Zero VOC, Water-Resistant

No water-soluble intumescent ingredients means better moisture resistance. 0 g/L VOC content per SCAQMD Rule 1168 for indoor air quality compliance.

Fire-Rated Wall Assemblies

CODE COMPLIANCE FOR ELECTRICAL PENETRATIONS

Protects electrical outlet boxes, switch boxes, and junction boxes in 1-hour and 2-hour fire-rated gypsum wallboard assemblies with wood or steel studs. Meets IBC Section 714.4.2 requirements for membrane penetrations. Allows reduced box spacing (tested to less than 16 inches) when installed per UL listing. Required when box area exceeds 16 square inches, aggregate box area exceeds 100 square inches per 100 square feet of wall, or boxes are installed back-to-back or closer than 24 inches on opposite sides of the wall.

Soundproofing and Acoustic Isolation

STC 62 RATED PERFORMANCE

Seals the air gaps around electrical boxes that compromise sound isolation in party walls and rated assemblies. Ideal for multi-family residential, hotels, dormitories, hospitals, schools, offices, and any project where STC ratings are specified. One of the highest-rated acoustic putty pads available, outperforming typical competitors by 7-10 STC points.

Membrane Penetrations

BEYOND ELECTRICAL BOXES

Seals med-gas valve boxes, clean-out tees, tub and shower valves, washing machine connection boxes, dryer exhaust recesses, ice maker connections, and other recessed fixtures that penetrate one side of a fire-rated wall. Also used for through-penetrations, blank openings, and construction gaps where a firestop seal is needed.

Retrofit and Renovation

NON-HARDENING FOR EASY RE-ENTRY

Simplifies firestop work in existing buildings where electrical boxes need protection or existing firestop systems need repair. The non-hardening formula removes cleanly and can be reused, reducing material waste and labor time compared to caulks and sealants that must be cut out and replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size electrical box does one pad cover?

Each SSP4S pad fits a standard 1.5-inch deep 4S single-gang box with no cutting required. For double-gang or larger boxes, use the SSP9S (9 in x 9 in) or combine multiple pads.

Does this meet IBC code for electrical boxes in fire-rated walls?

Yes. The SSP4S is UL Certified under category CLIV and helps meet IBC Section 714.4.2 requirements when installed per the listing.

Can I use it on plastic electrical boxes?

Yes. Certified for both metallic and non-metallic outlet and switch boxes in gypsum wallboard assemblies.

Does it harden over time?

No. It remains soft and pliable indefinitely for easy adjustments or future retrofit work.

How does it compare to other putty pads for soundproofing?

The SSP4S has an STC rating of 62, which is 7-10 points higher than most competing products. This is a meaningful difference in acoustic performance.

What about exposed electrical conductors?

Do not apply to exposed or energized conductors. Follow standard electrical safety practices.
